girl in bus station
It was a day of firsts for this girl. I was the first foreigner she had seen. My polaroid was the first picture she had of herself, and the bus ride was also her first. The bus trip was tough though. She (and about half the other Tibetans on this trip) vomited repeatedly out the window more than you would think is possible. In the middle of the ride, about 6 or 7 hours in after traveling over endless featureless plateau, she and her young brother signaled the driver to stop. They collected their bags and started walking away from the road and up to the hills.
People always ask me if she is wearing makeup. She is not. Many Tibetans have bright red cheeks burned by a life in the wind and sun at high altitude.
