I now know what a follow focus is, what a 1st assistant camera does, and how to rack focus.

(The ring is a steel hose clamp.)

Yeah, the ring is a steel hose clamp, like Lucius said. They can be had for $1.50. Get one that's a bit bigger than you think you need and cut off the slack.

Also, I put a rubber band around my focus ring before I put the clamp on it (to protect it). You can also put another rubber band on the ring, draw your witness marks for focus, and wedge a paper clip in the focus pull ring to show you where your focus is. It's all very neat.

Anything at Home Depot that will make my kids stop running around the house making manual focus infuginpossible? Perhaps tranquilizers....

Genius! How are you liking the 7D?

    7. lonelysandwich 64 months ago | reply

Loving it, @fleetinglight. Shooting a ton with it, although the follow-focus is off for the time being. A little cumbersome to leave it on for just stills. But it only takes a few seconds to put it on and take it off, so you're golden.

Cool. I'm normally a Nikon shooter but I've got a couple Canon lenses laying around and was thinking of getting one, especially for the video.

Brilliantly done sir :) Plumbing equipment and SLR photography were meant to go together.

Can we get step by step instructions for this awesome hack?

    11. tabbr 64 months ago | reply

Okay, but not really that complicated:

      1. Acquire the materials (hose clamp, bolt, nut and drawer handle)
      2. Drill a hole through the hose clamp
      3. ???
      4. Profit!

OMG, this is so awesome! I've been lamenting my lack of a feather touch on my lens while I try DOF effects.
