Little King

The goldcrest is called the "king of the birds" in European folklore. The scientific name (Regulus regulus) means king or knight. In Norway we call it "Fuglekonge", meaning bird king.

I've never really noticed them and how common they are, both where I'm from and where I live now, until I got my new and fast photography gear this spring.

They're hard to spot if you don't look for them, and you have to be really quick to capture them - as they constantly jump around for insects in the trees, in addition to being the smallest European bird.

My album of birds and nests here.
