Six Seconds of an Anthill Without Ants

    Challenge #50: Long Exposure

My idea for this shot was to take a long (several seconds) shot of the Opera in Oslo, with calm, flat water in front. I also wanted lots of people scurring about with ghost trails, since the Opera is known as an "ant hill". Unfortunately the weather was grey and cold, resulting in very few tourists running about. Oh well, at least I got two out of three. :-)

    Technical details
Camera on tripod and remotely triggered. Shot with a Canon 17-40mm at 20mm,
with a gazillion filters mounted to maximize the shutter length (graduated polarizer + 6 stop ND + graduated ND). It was still very bright, so the final exposure was 6 seconds, ISO 100, f/22.

Post processing in Adobe Lightroom, cleaning out quite a bit of spots (forgot to clean the sensor!) and adjusted color and sharpness. Also some selective exposure adjustments to get a better mood in the image.

That is a funky title:) lovely mood with a sweet tone. The calm water is also nice. But I still sort of miss something. I like this building a lot myself, but find it really hard to photograph. It's difficult to find a viewpoint that gives dynamic and balance. In this I think it is a tad to crammed on top, and maybe a tad much water, but placing the building in the middle of the frame would leave it too static. You need a crane;)

When I look at the pool, I am happy that you have been able to produce something new and out of ordinary. I think the vignette is a 'must' with so much water. I just don't quite understand why you have chosen to leave so much room on the right. Great colour and mood.

Wow, thanks for all your comments and faves! I'm kind of surprised I got this much feedback on this.

Brynjar: I agree with you that there's something missing here. Personally I would have liked to have something in the foreground. You're spot on about the building (I love it, but it is difficult to do it justice on camera). I disagree with you on the crammed top, but I do think I've included too much water.

Nerdegutt: Takk for hyggelig kommentar.

Ausfi: Thanks for a constructive and kind comment. I left room on the right to get a more pleasing composition. But looking at it now and after all your comments I think I've kept too much. I think I could crop some of the bottom and right parts and get a better result. Thanks for your tip! :-)

Harald: Takk for kommentar.

Herlig dybde i vannet.
