Queen's Road On Chinese New Years Day, Hong Kong, China [1902] Carlton H. Graves [RESTORED]

Entitled: Queen's Road On Chinese New Years Day, Hong Kong, China [1902] CH Graves [RESTORED] I did minor spot repair, adjusted contrast and tone, adding a final sepia.

 

The image was found in the US Library of Congress' collection under Reproduction Number LC-USZ62-118528. A pleasant look at the hectic pace of Hong Kong, even back then.

 

The photograph was from the right half of a Stereoview print. Also, it is noted that Black and White film emulsions back in those days were unable to fully record the red end of the color spectrum. Hence, some of the signage on the buildings to the left, probably had their letters in red, which ultimately was rendered black in the final image, making them very difficult to discern. Additionally, CH Grave's Asian image holdings were all thought to have been created by Hebert George Ponting, the famous cinematographer of Scott's "Terra Nova" Antarctica expedition. Ponting at the time was traveling through Asia and was working under "for hire" arrangements. Thus, a tremendous number of very well known period photographs of China, copyrighted at the time by a variety of publishers, were actually created by Ponting.
