Magdalene bridge is the oldest cast-iron bridge in Cambridge, rebuilt in 1982. The original bridge, a stone bridge that was built in 1756 was designed by James Essex. Throughout its history, the river Cam has been an important aspect of the city which depends on it for trade and travel. Today, Magdalene Bridge marks the site of the very first crossing point over the river made over twelve centuries ago.
