1992 Swaziland, Mbabane - Malagwane Hill
Photo taken just below the Swazi Inn which is on the right in the trees. In those days it was one road, carriageway in both directions and was treacherous!! Slow moving vehicles like this truck used to struggle with the incline, drivers like the blue vehicle grew impatient and tried to over take, oncoming traffic were relieved to find open road after the preceeding chicanes and sped up ... result - collisions!
There was also a ghost reportedly haunting Malagwane Hill - a woman who used to hitch hike a lift off drivers - only for them to find when they reached the top of the hill the lady passenger had disappeared. There was one story where she directed the driver down a road at the bottom of the hill for a short distance to a hut where he spent the night, only to find himself in the morning somewhere near Lobamba and in the middle of the open veld.
The lady was apparently someone who had died on the Hill in an accident and was looking for her boyfriend and the driver of the car which had killed them both.
At the top of Malagwane Hill there was a sign which changed periodically to reflect the number of accidents. I wish I had taken a photo of this sign. The last time time I saw it it read -
600 deaths on this road in 3 years
