Cauld, dreich Africa!
A male Waterbuck poses nicely in the stunted vegetation cloaking open moorland high up in the Aberdares. This is not the Africa that we expect with hot blazing deserts, endless savannah or steamy dark jungles. This feels like home, like a Scottish scene -but this is no deer in the heather!
The Aberdare range offers something different. Here there are African Mammals against a very un-African backdrop. The Aberdare range does not offer up its secrets easily but is well worth a visit. You may not see the rare and elusive Bongo or the Black Panther (melanistic Leopard) but there are other treasures here such as Giant Forest Hog and even Black Serval. The Aberdare NP is a hotspot for melanistic cats and though we didn't see any on our visit they are seen quite frequently.
