Too close!

Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus)

A tuskless bull photographed on the edge of Udawalawe NP.

I took this image with a 70mm lens in a crouching position -it sounds daring but in fact part of the park boundary runs along the edge of a main road/agricultural land where an electric fence prevents elephants from straying out into cultivations. I simply took this image through the fence.

Since taking this image I have been advised that the electric fence is not a reliable barrier and in retrospect my actions were foolhardy!

Image re-worked and framed by a friend.

    Very nice shot. Beautiful colour.

Well, you may better trust on the fence with this giant looking at you. If it gets really angry, any fence must be just a minor obstacle for an animal that easily uproots trees? Anyhow, your daring action resulted in a great photograph!

It is always advisable never to trust the fence. It is said if the vegetation touches the fence, it might have a grounding effect-weakening the electric power to deter an elephant.

This is a lovely photo. But please be careful of the wild animals.
Thank you for enjoying our lovely country.

Thanks for the comment and the advice Chandima -I take heed of what you say and don't think I'll repeat this action again!!!
(My wife also thought I was stupid and foolhardy!)

Having followed your link I see that close approach reliant on protection from the fence is indeed risky. I hadn't realised that these elephants approach the fence expecting food and may not be happy if they don't get it. I now feel a bit of a fool but luckily not a squashed fool!
    Thanks again.
