3526 - Newcastle Flyer

3526 and 3265 stomp through Pennant Hills with the Newcastle Flyer special for Heritage Express. Due to a hi-rail between Pennant Hills and Hornsby, the suburban train ahead of the steam special was held on the platform, which meant the steam train had come to a stop on the steep hill up from Epping.

A handful of excited children on the platform just got more and more excited as you could tell the second that the steam train started again, with a steadily increasing "whump, whump whump" as the two locos tackled the grade from a standing start. It was an insprirational sound, and was the reason why I chose Pennant Hills for the shot - the grades here are steep for down trains, and the steam specials (and older diesels) make one heck of a noise!
