White Sands New Mexico 2-19-2006 12-30-45 PM_0238

White Sands National Monument, New Mexico.

This park sits in a broad basin that used to be a huge inland lake millions of years ago. The lake dried a left the fine, white gypsum dunes that move constantly with the persistent winds. The sands feel and sound like snow, except that they are cool instead of freezing cold.

Thank you! Photos of White Sands are tricky b/c of the extremes in contrast. When you have that much contrast, sometimes black&white is just the right way to go.
