Researching Ayurveda in Modern-day Banaras: Doctor of Ayurveda, Sparsa CentreClinic

This is the owner of Sparsa Center located in Assi. As the main practioner of what seemed to be a profitable Ayurveda center, the doctor was helpful in talking about Ayurveda in general, his personal history with Ayurveda, his perceptions of Ayurveda in Banaras, and about his clinic in particular. Talking with me for about an hour, he was willing to give lengthly responses, answering many of the questions that lingered during my research.

Unlike the Assistant Professor, he was able to talk about a recent upsurge of Ayurveda being publically practiced. Since British colonialism had managed to suppress Ayurveda in Banaras, he said when establishing the Sparsa Centre in 2004, it was the first modern Ayurveda center in Banaras. Also, although he highly respected Ayurveda, he was willing to be honest in saying it has become touristy and that unlike modern medicine it does not have quick fixes for illnesses.
