Bank vole

During the recent snowy weather I noticed that bank voles were appearing from a wood and weed pile next to where I feed Cobweb the goat. I started scattering a small amount of her food near the pile every morning and now, within a few seconds of hearing the food hit the ground, I'm being treated to seeing voles scampering out to grab it.

The area is in deep shade, so far from ideal for photographing them (and I don't want to use flash) and I'm unlikely to get wonderful quality images - but I think they're such cute little things that I'll make do with what I can get! I'm also happy just watching them..

The bank vole is the smallest UK vole and is active all year.

This is a cropped image, taken when the vole paused briefly.

Great crop and sharp focus Rachel. You amaze me. If I saw this I'd be running and screaming all the way.
When we were in yellowstone camping in the backcountry a group of voles were right under our teepee. Not only did they run around all night but they were squeeking as well. Really freaked me out because I didn't know what they were until morning. I sat up all night with a flashlight and if they had come in, whatever it was, I was going to beat them to death. Right. My husband slept through the entire incident.
The way you present them here, they are kind of cute. I just don't want to sleep with them.

I have never seen one and love the little mammals. Usually I get just fleeting glimpses of such creatures and no photos. i'd be delighted with this shot.

Very cute! My first thought upon reading "bank vole" was that he was into finance. Then I remembered the other "bank".

Super photo. (All we get by our goats are mice and rats. I think I would prefer voles.)
