Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas)

A couple of these butterflies are visiting my herb garden at the moment. They are very territorial and each has a patch - and whenever one strays towards the other a battle ensues.

They're pretty little things and gleam beautifully when the light catches their wings.

If anyone's interested, I made a note of the butterflies in the herb garden in the past couple of days:

Painted Lady

Small Tortoiseshell

Small White

Large White

Green-veined White

Peacock

Brimstone

Small Copper

Common Blue

Gatekeeper

Meadow Brown

Ringlet

Essex Skipper

Speckled Wood

Red Admiral

Not a bad selection :-)

(A day after I posted this a Comma and a Holly Blue joined them.)

Not easy typing this because I have a greyhound who thinks she's a lap dog and is being a bit squirmy... soon be time to head out for a walk (and a moth night at a local wood).
