• is that an eye? - Zaxy
  • or that one? which end goes first?
GREAT shot- and fascinating to see caterpillars so late in the season! (at least, it would be 'late' over here!) - Zaxy
  • The dark 'dot' there is one of the spiracles (which allow gas exchange) - the eyes are at the other end of the caterpillar ;-)
  • The eye are up this end!

this is a textbook-worthy shot! (actually, better than that... i've found that textbooks often have crappy photos...)

gorgeous... and one i've never seen before (which makes sense, it being native to the UK and all...). Interesting to me that it's obviously happy eating a North American tree. I looked this guy up... seems it's happy on all kinds of different host plants!

Thanks for sharing - beautiful shot. =)

Lovely one!!! I think I saw one today on a fence post near Saltfleet. As I was in birdwatching mode, no macro with me, how stupid is that! Oh well maybe tomorrow.

Gas exchange eh, better leave that alone, wouldn't want to lower the tone :-)

Quite stunning. I'd have been terrified of this if I had encountered it as a child.
