Running US-212 between Little Big Horn in Montana and Belle Fourche in South Dakota cuts about 50 miles and an hour off of the East/West run on I-90. Saving fuel costs is important in trucking.
But the shortcut is not without hazards. At night the deer graze the grass along the edge of the road and cross without warning. Hitting one can cause enough damage to stop a big truck, usually from damage to the radiator and CAC.
And in the winter months the driving conditions can b treacherous. Highway crews put down de-icer to help reduce the hazard of icy roadways. These photos show the ice buildup from the spray of the melted snow and ice.
