With its 600 acres of parks, gardens and open spaces and year-round floral displays Cheltenham has gained the reputation of being ‘The Garden Town of England’. Throughout the year Cheltenham greets both visitors and residents alike with flowers, not only in its public parks but also in many private gardens, shops and pubs with hanging basket decorations.
There are 9 public gardens or parks in Cheltenham, the largest of which is Pittville Park, which incorporates two lakes and a golf course. Together with Montpellier Gardens and Imperial Gardens these parks were created as ‘pleasure grounds’ attached to the spas. During the 20th century recreation grounds provided by Cheltenham Burough Council has been added (14 acre Sandford Park opened in 1927 to which an open-air swimming pool called the Lido was added in 1953).
