"Beep, beep!" - Walking on Air!
While sitting on the couch in our small desert shack in Anza Borrego desert looking in my camera at photos that I had recently taken, I caught something out the corner of my eye. I looked up and standing right there in the open sliding glass doorway about to walk in was this Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus)!
Even though I didn't hear his, "Beep, beep," I knew just what he wanted. So, I quickly attached my camera to my harness and the chase was on! But, boy, was he fast and much more adept at negotiating the spines of the cholla cactus than I.
However, I know you would have been proud of me, if you could have seem me jump over and navigate my way through the sharp cactus mine field until at last I was able to get a few shots before he quickly scurried off. (Maybe Wily Coyote was on his tail too!)
Fortunately, I had set my camera to a 1/3200 sec. shutter speed or this shot would have been a total blur, for he can reach running speeds of 30 km/hr (18.6 miles/hr)!
