pro surfer malik joyeux killed at pipeline
sadly i was at pipe and saw it happen. it was a crowded day but at first he seemed like he had the wave. he made it down the face and the lip caught him in the back and he went down. to the untrained eye, it didn't look like a deadly wipe out. but all the surfers around swarmed and formed a chain looking for him when he didn't surface and his leash and board were ripped. it was gutwrenching watching the surfers search for him.
i'm glad i didn't have my camera with me, but instead my eyes and ears. i was there to paint -- but after the tragedy i was moved by the spirit of all the pro surfers who united to find a fallen brother.
i know i'll never be able to forget what i witnessed yesterday. but i posted this stock image of malik joyeux vibrant and alive and happy. he was known to be a humble guy with no ego trip. may he rest in peace.
