St George Reef Lighthouse

After 10 years of construction and $700,000, the St George Reef Lighthouse was completed in 1891 and the 1st order fresnel lens lit in 1892. The lighthouse operation was taken over by the Coast Guard in the 1940's and decommissioned in 1975. The St George Reef Preservation Society was formed in 1986 and began restoration of the lighthouse which continues to this day. As part of fund raising for the restoration, the society conducts tours of the lighthouse once a month November thru May by helicoptering guests to the lighthouse which is 7 miles off shore of Crescent City, CA. I had the experience of this tour on 3/11/2012. This was a tough shot as there was a lot of vibration in the 4 passenger Raven R-44 helicopter.
