Bream - Abramis brama
Bream - Abramis brama (Linnaeus, 1758) [more of this species]
There are two bream species in Britain, the Bream (Sometimes called Bronze Bream or Common Bream) and the Silver Bream. The main difference is the scale count. The Bream has over 13 rows of scales between the front of the dorsal and the lateral line where as the silver has 11 or less. This means the scales on the Bream look a lot smaller and there is a cluttering of small scales towards the top. The silver bream also have reddish fins and a bigger eye. Beware though, as the bream commonly hybridises with Roach giving a very Silver Bream like hybrid sometimes.
