Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird cockpit. Developed as a follow up to the U-2, the SR-71 was created at the world famous Lockheed "Skunk Works" under the guidance of aeronutical genius Kelly Johnson. It remains the highest and fastest flying turbojet aircraft in history, operating most efficiently at 80,000 feet and at speeds in excess of Mach 3. The museums plane set numerous world records; New York to London(1 hour,54 minutes), London to Los Angeles(3hrs,47minutes), US coast to coast (1hour,8minutes), and Los Angeles to Washington DC (64minutes). The last two were set on March6, 1990.
