Description of work : This building was known as the foremost social landmark in downtown Denver. The red granite and sandstone building is located on a triangular site bounded by Broadway Street, Tremont Place, and 17th Street. This building was one of the first examples of a fully fireproof construction in the country. At its completion, the two million dollar hotel was considered the height of luxury, with each of the original 410 rooms having a window with a street view and a door to an interior atrium which had onyx walls and a stained glass skylight. In 1959 William B. Tabler designed the Brown Palace Tower which was across the street on Tremont Place and is connected to the original building at the second story by a twenty-five foot sky bridge. It contains 288 "executive type" guest rooms. The sculptor James Whitehouse carved a series of 26 medallions set between the windows on the 7th floor, and a series of decorations over the entrance on 17th street.
