Pompeii: view of Pistrinum (bakery)

Description of work: The hourglass-shaped catilli stones are seen resting on top of metae, the cone-shaped stones below. Grain was poured in the top "funnel", wooden beams placed in the square side openings, and the stone was turned by a donkey to grind grain into flour. The arched openings and chimney of an oven are visible at left.
