Chingwe's Hole

Chingwe means rope. I brought a rope for our descent into Chingwe's Hole, but climbing down the roots proved to be easier. The hole is about 10m deep now, though locals say it used to be 30m deep before erosion washed dirt into it.

I read The Hot Zone by Richard Preston shortly after visiting the hole. If I had read it before, I probably wouldn't have gone in - Preston's account of tracing the Ebola virus to Kitum Cave in Kenya bore a strong similarity to Chingwe's Hole.

But so far, I feel fine.
