Alert Meadowlark

    Newer Older

An Eastern Meadowlark stands tall in a grassy field looking for danger. I specifically went to this farmland area in search of Crested CaraCara but while I didn't find any of them I did find plenty of Eastern Meadowlarks. The first indication they were around was hearing their beautiful song while driving along. My sister was with me so we stopped to see if we could find them. At first we didn't see any but once we stayed put for a while we noticed the Meadowlarks moving around in the field. It's hard to think something so bright yellow that stands out in this photo can blend in so well but they are a master of camouflage. When you are standing up and these birds aren't standing tall showing off their yellow breast they completely blend in with their surroundings. I normally always photograph ground birds from the ground perspective but it was even more important to do so with this species so you could actually see the bird. I also like how it shows them standing in their grassy habitate. Lastly, it's a very subtle thing but I really like the tiny purple flower to the right of the bird. Taken on Joe Overstreet Road at the north end of Lake Kissimmee, Florida. ~ 1/27/17 - ¹⁄₁₂₅₀ sec at f/5.6 - ISO400 ~ 700 mm ~ 500 mm f/4
