Fueling Ourselves -- Algae innovators
Sequence from the upcoming film, Fueling Ourselves. Researchers from the University of Texas have created a new blue-green algae that may soon be fueling automobiles. Algae, 150 million years of which made petroleum, offer great promise in solving our food-or-fuel dilemma. The oldest, fastest-replicating plants on Earth, algae produce vast amounts of oils, sugars and cellulose for biodiesel and ethanol feedstock, as well as highly nutritional sustenance for humans and animals -- and take-up the global warming greenhouse-gas CO2 in the process.
