Exhibition: New England Survey
March 28 – May 11, 2008
Opening reception, Thursday, March 27, 5:30-7:30pm

This exhibition surveys contemporary work from and of the New England landscape, featuring one artist from (or project based in) each of the 6 New England states: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. The exhibition takes for its inspiration a poem by Amherst poet Robert Francis (1901-1987), “New England Mind.” The works highlighted often begin with and focus on a very specific locale within the regional landscape, yet meditate upon on the grander, ineffable idea of a “sense of place.”

The featured photographers/projects are Barbara Bosworth (a series focusing on a meadow in Carlisle, MA); Tanja Alexia Hollander (series of minimal views of ME marshes); Janet Pritchard (series of CT landscapes that show effects of time and history); Thad Russell (series on his parents' self-built home and land in upper VT's Northeast Kingdom); Jonathan Sharlin (series based around walks in the RI landscape); and Paul Taylor(series done in wet plate collodion on the Connecticut River in NH) .
