Exhibition: Contemporary Vernacular/Keepsake (2005)
Contemporary Vernacular
November 5, 2004 - January 23, 2005

This group show featured contemporary responses to family and found photographs. Artists included Yolanda del Amo, Louise Bourque, Nancy Dudley, Susan E. Evans, Joseph Heidecker, Priya Kambli, and David Prifti. The domestic emerged as the key theme in the exhibition, in terms of using and referencing family imagery, as well as imitating and critiquing home display and production. By mixing genres and materials, the works had one foot in the 19th century and another in the 21st century. Curated by PRC Curator Leslie K. Brown, the PRC exhibition was held in conjunction with the BU Art Gallery's exhibition, In the Vernacular: Everyday Photographs from the Rodger Kingston Collection, and the BU Sherman Gallery’s student show, Keepsake, juried by Brown, and a showing of Found Polaroids from Found magazine. The BU Art Gallery also held a symposium on vernacular photography, entitled Vernacular Reframed. Significant PRC programming also accompanied the show.
