State lawmakers tour cleanup sites - Oct. 27, 2010
As legislators consider the next biennial budget, a few will have seen first-hand how Local Toxics Control Account money can help clean up property to promote redevelopment and job creation.
State Sen. Karen Fraser, Reps. Jim McCune and Jeannie Darneille, and staff members from the Senate Democratic Caucus and Gov. Chris Gregoire’s office toured four Port properties last week in various stages of cleanup and redevelopment.
With its dedicated source of money separate from the general fund, the LTCA is intended to be spent specifically on cleanup projects. More than a third of the $119 million in the 2009-11 budget, however, was diverted to other purposes. Even in good economic years more than 10 percent of the account was used for other purposes.
