Robert is now recognised as the first NZ casualty of World War 1.
"Funeral of the first Auckland Volunteer to lose his life in connection with the war. The military funeral accorded to the late Robert Hislop, a Sapper of the New Zealand Engineers, crossing Grafton Bridge, Auckland on August 21. The late Mr Hislop met his death by falling off the Parnell Bridge whilst on duty guarding it.
