SCRYING
TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 2010
7:30–9:30 P.M.
MoMA

PopRally invites you to the world premiere of SCRYING, a non-narrative performance ballet conceived and directed by New York-based artist Jen DeNike and choreographed by Melissa Barak. Inspired by George Balanchine's architectural forms and structural movements, SCRYING emphasizes repetitive patterns and gestures that translate the iconic ballerina image, merging contemporary art and classical ballet. "Scrying" is the act of divination or obtaining spiritual visions by peering into water, a mirror, or another reflective surface; the ballerinas engage in a scrying ritual of their own, transforming an architectural space into one of ethereal vision.

Please join us before the ballet for a live musical performance by Soft Circle (Hisham Akira Bharoocha and Ben Vida). Soft Circle makes tribal/electronic/ambient anthems that forge paths between the spirit world and the human tribes of past and present. They will perform an original piece written specifically for this evening.

Special thanks to ACE HOTEL New York, True Vodka, Inc., Sud De France Wines Jaja de Jau and Skalli, Société Perrier, and Capezio Ballet Makers.
