It looks to me that D3 shot looks 'worse' because the focus is slightly more backwards than the D3S. You can see that in the hand, which is sharp in D3S side and on the hair/hear, sharper in D3.
This is the consequence of shooting at f1.4 and probably close-up making the DOF razor-thin.

DD, what do you find in terms of focus speed... I also heard that the hood on the old D model is tricky to mount/unmount and the new one should be with the newer design... is this actually a problem?

      Cheers for the photo comparison

Excuse me if I am wrong, but have you not focused on different parts on each image?

I curently have the D, but will ponder the G question further....!

Definetly less noise with the D3s but the G is slightly sharper.

What the D3s does in low light is just indescribable. I love it with the 85mm 1.4D lens, it is perfect.

This is not a fair comparison. The D3s has a lot less noise and retains a lot of detail @ ISO 6400 while the D3 stands a lot worse. Secondly, the 85mm f1.4D shot is misfocused. My 85mm f1.4D sample is tack sharp wide open on D3 and D600 and probably at least as sharp as the G lens. The G has indeed a warmer tone, little less purple fringing and slightly more contrast but the difference is minimal. And the D focuses a lot faster on pro bodies.
