Sharon Christa McAuliffe should have been the eleventh woman in space when Shuttle Challenger launched on January 28 1986. The Shuttle broke apart 73 seconds into its flight due to a failure in the right solid rocket booster, killing all seven crew. Christa was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 2004.
