East Berlin Gloom - 1978
This over-the -wall shot expresses clearly the gloomy atmosphere that seemed to be ever-present on the East side of the Wall. Shot from an observation tower on the West side.
Lessons: I consciously shot this as a rule-of-thirds photograph- the top of the wall being the bottom third line. It was a rainy, misty day, I made this work to my advantage by exposing for the snow and letting the distance (East Berlin) go a little darker. The prewar building facades help develop the sense of oppression. I consider this to be one of my most successful East/West photos.
