Red Grouse - Male - Calling - 6

Canon 1Ds - 800mm - 1/640th @ f10 - ISO 400

My first proper go at nature photography with a long lens. There was a little sun on and off during the session, which clearly lifts the subject and provides a natural catchlight.

The birds were very compliant as I sat in the car, tripod set up, and shooting through the passenger window - they even walked closer at times. Thanks to Chris at the camera club for suggesting the spots to stop.

Tricky to get it with it's mouth open.

Some places, in the middle of nowhere, idiots stopped their car to let the dog out, of course frightening the birds away - could they not see a giant telescope in the car as they waled up - what did they think I was doing?

    Not bad at all Stephen.

We saw your giant lens no problem!! Didn't have time to stop and say hello though, as we were in a rush to get back.

I love the colours in this one!
Was that bird sitting on your feet? Amazing how close it seems!

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

    Excellent results with this lens!
  • Pixelda 5y

    Birds were 50-100 feet away, giving a DOF of 6-12 inches at f5.6 (f2.8 + 2xTC)

They're a great series of shots Stephen, you must be pleased with the results from the lens.

To go and get pictures first time out, I was well chuffed - mind you, a big learning curve still to do, and the UK is not the easiest place to do wildlife
  • Geoff Main 5y

The rich colour and sharpness stand out, nice series of pics. Mind you I thought you'd be lugging that lens 'up hill & down dale', not sitting in the car! :) Looking forward to following the results you get with it and (as always) learning heaps.

These have worked well and the sun certainly helped. I bet carrying that thing around beats rugby training!
