White House in 1866
Executive Mansion, North Front
A scattering of pedestrians pose on the sidewalk in front of the north face of the White House in 1866, only one year after the end of the Civil War. Although most of the figures are adult men, there is one woman in a hoop skirt and a young girl. Notice how Pennsylvania Avenue is unpaved dirt, which must have been a muddy mess in inclement weather, but there is a set of trolly or rail lines down the center of the street.
