UFO Houses
Designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in the late 1960s as mass-produced holiday homes, these prefabricated plastic flying saucers can be airlifted by helicopters between any vacation hotspot, whether it is a ski resort or a beachfro...nt property. Moreover, a simple hookup is supposed to be able to bring residents of these space-age pods all the amenities of modern life. In short, these UFO houses do not just represent our faith in technology and desire in conquering space; they also reveal our optimism that the postwar economic growth would bring universal leisure and mobility to a global middle class in a world without borders.

Today, these futuristic architectures and optimism are rotting away. Wandering around this ruin, the largest its kind anywhere, one sees abandoned flat screen TVs, DVD players, refrigerators, designer furniture and even yachts. There are also open beer cans, as if the mother ship has taken all the former residents away after a big party. And there is still an onsite security guard and maintenance workers busy doing landscaping, hoping perhaps the mother ship will return one day.
