Small Town - Colorado Style

    Prev Next

Telluride, Colorado, like several other small towns in the area, was established as the result of the discovery of gold. The first mining claim was posted during 1875. Telluride is within the San Juan range of the Rocky Mountains. With the town at an elevation of 8,750 feet, the miners experienced harsh winters. During 1889, Butch Cassidy robbed the San Miguel Bank (Telluride is within San Miguel County) in Telluride (the bank later burned and that is not it at the left of the photo). Mining ended and the first of the town's ski lifts was constructed during 1972. Today, Telluride depends largely on the tourism and skiing business. The street in the photo is Colorado Avenue. I find it surprising that it was constructed as wide as it is.

In my memory (I'll look it up later) Telluride is 7500ft, MV is 8300. I don't know where or how high Tomboy (or other mining camps) is/was.

Thanks Mark. I saw the 8,750 listed on several internet sources, but I think that you might be correct.

      Rut-Roh,
I see Google Earth seems to say 8800 and 9500
(making me wrong about each, as well as the relative difference).
I've heard the alt is a grid average and I don't know how large the grids are. I consider all of Telluride proper to be at the same altitude, but I wouldn't say the same thing about MV (which, as I understand it is really part of Telluride).
I'll keep poking around to see what come of it.

Beautiful shot. Love the colors and sharpness throughout. Your composition really leads the eye through the photo and into the mountains. Looks like a wonderful place to visit.

Thank you Allan. Telluride is such a scenic old small town and that mountain at the end of Colorado Avenue is just astonishing. Viewing some of my old photos of the area really does make me want to return.

Interesting place - it was once a hidden gem - then the Hollywood crowd came in and drove up the tourism and the cost of living. Most people who work there live 35 miles away because they can't afford to live there anymore.
A beautiful view of the Rockies from there.

      Hi Paul,
It really is a beautiful place. Just to stand there on the street and view those mountains is rather stunning. The town is not large, but I like the architecture too. There are just so many amazing places within a day's drive of home.

Wow, no wonder Telluride is so popular. I've heard about it for ages. This is just stunning. That has to be one of the most picturesque towns in all of America. Absolutely beautiful shot, Ron.

Thank you Betty. I don't ski, but from what I have heard, Telluride has some of the best skiing in the country. We have visited the town twice and it has wonderful clear crisp air during the summer.
