A very poignant piece of street sculpture in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Emigration was a curse right through from Famine times (1845+) into the 1950s. The US was so far away that emigrants to there were the subject of "American Wakes" (ie never to be seen again). Remittances sent home often sustained the local economy and had a category of their own in the national accounts.
