Pondering

It’s that time of year when I toy with the idea of entering the landscape photographer of the year.

I use to enter a number of annual competitions and had relative success, but I have mixed feelings when it comes to others judging my work. Maybe it’s because I try to ‘plough my own furrow’, (a very kind observation made by a friend recently) and entering certain competitions makes you fashion your work towards what ‘you think’ the judges are expecting. I have seen this in people’s entries and all too often the winning images are testament to this practice. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with playing that game, the rewards are high, but I get an unpleasant taste in my mouth when the thought enters my thinking. Maybe I’m just not a fan of trains or full English breakfasts, but I have considered trying to make myself…

Or it may be the fact that others judging my work is a difficult process and when the judges don’t see your vision the impending ego feels it! Who know what is good anyway, (see crude defence mechanism there). I’ve also seen people coming up with so very ‘English’ statements…(I know I won’t win, but…I’d be happy to make the book…I’m having a punt this year, err isn’t that mine!)

I wonder if it’s the draw of being thrust into the superstardom of professionals that keeps the more serious minded person entering, or maybe it’s the 10k (although I don’t think so)…

I also find the mutual back patting amusing as everybody wants to make sure they are not insulting the next winner (o: ok ok, I admit it, I too am guilty of this behaviour, but I wouldn’t expect anybody other than good would be in with a chance anyway, so that’s ok, isn’t it!)

Anyway this year I have taken another punt with these images I don’t expect to win… (Ok ok sorry) but my ego would love to! Then again I knew and liked Antony Spencer’s work before he went stratospheric! If only…if only… I very much look forward to seeing the results, good luck all fellow entrants, feel free to post your sets here so I can judge you, err... pat you on the back! (o:

Oh by the way, I announced a new workshop this morning, Whitby Seascape One Day Workshop 29th September 2012 and astonishingly I have only 2 places left, if you’re interested please get details from my profile…
