Quirky Englishness

Each year we eat lunch overlooking the slowly rising tide that cuts off our exit from the island that is St Michael’s Mount. It’s a strangely exhilarating experience, knowing that your way out to the mainland is reliant on a flotilla of small passenger boats. Anyway, during this short period, (for me at least) happens one of the funniest events of the year. With shoes and socks in hand and with rolled up trowers and sometimes toddlers on shoulders, people attempt to beat nature. They try to flee the island before the tide wins. As we dig into our cream teas, you can see the contemplation and indecision on the part of spouses refusing to take the plunge. I’m sure you could make an Oscar winning short film about this rather uniquely quirky English event,
