Milkweed Borer (Tetraopes femoratus)

This beetle, called a Milkweed Borer, is specialized at feeding on milkweed plants that contain toxic alkaloids. The bright red and contrasting black coloration is an aposematic warning signal to it being poisonous if ingested. This photo was taken at the Sinclair Tract of the Peabody WMA in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky
