Caught a bee

A Bee-eater had just caught itself a bee and landed on a wire in order to prepare it. It has to take the sting out before it can swallow it.

In the series of photos below I try to show how the Bee-eater prepares the bee for swallowing.

Bee-eaters chase bees and wasps only if there are suitable perches close, like wires or dead branches. Thats why bee keepers are advised to place their bee hives far from wires or trees with dry branches etc.

By the way Bee-eaters eat more wasps than they do bees, and wasps kill more bees than bee-eaters. So overall Bee-eaters benefit the bees!

Bee-eaters visit Cyprus during autumn and spring, passing through as they migrate.
