NS Savannah, 1959 - Ship Christening

    Newer Older

Launching party, NS Savannah, Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower, sponsor, July 21, 1959. New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey.

Savannah was the world’s first nuclear-powered cargo and passenger ship, built as part of President Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" initiative. Although not meant to be profitable, its economic inefficiency destined it to a short career.

I was present at this Christening. My grandfather, Clement Gray Taylor, worked on this craft.
He came to America as a young man from Scotland in the 1920's and worked at NYS until his retirement about 1961. I have his name and as little boy, I loved nothing better than to listen to his "shipyard stories". With all of the high-jinx he described it is hard to believe they got any work done. My regards to all who still remember this enterprise.
