This is the buried Southern portal of Wheatley tunnel. No trace of this tunnel can be found above ground today. The only tell tale clue being one inconspicous man hole cover that still leads you down here today. An inspection chamber was constructed through the doorway before the tunnel was filled in.

I think the landfill on this side of the retaining wall has been added to hold back the great weight of infill the other side.


The 819 yard Wheatley tunnel is situated on the closed Holmfield to St Pauls line. The Halifax High Level Railway was opened in 1890, the last train along this branch line was in 1960.
