Leicester Caribbean Carnival 2012
Leicester hosts a yearly Caribbean Carnival in the city and this year the parade through the streets was brought back. Over the last year or so, because of the lack of funding, the whole event has been confined to a single park and I have been busy when they have taken place.
This year, as I was off work, I decided to go along and take my camera to capture the event.
The parade was due to start at 1pm, work it's way into the centre of town for around 3pm and then get back to where it started for 5pm.
I arrived at the park where it was due to start at around 12.30, which gave me a bit of time to walk around and see what else was around before the parade started.
I got to a spot that i thought would be a good location for photos, with easy access to get away and make my way into town after it passed. With the start just minutes away, it started to rain. It came down pretty quick for about 5 minutes and then as quickly as it started it had stopped.
I stayed in the same spot and watched the parade from start to finish, which took around 30 minutes in total to go by, then I made my way into town to try and get some different shots with different backgrounds.
While in the city centre, the rain started to come down heavily again, this time it lasted a bit longer. I still managed to find a decent place to wait for it to come by again and by the time it arrived where I was, the rain had virtually stopped.
After watching the full parade go by one more time, I decided that the weather was not looking the best, and probably would not get many different shots, so decided to leave it at that.
Despite the weather, it was a great day out, with everyone involved, either watching or participating in the carnival having a good time. It provided a different subject for me to photograph and if I am not working when it is on next year, I will definitely be back to watch it again.
