Spiderweb face tattooed Chin woman - Rakhine province, Myanmar
In Myanmar’s mountainous and hard-to-reach Chin State, the ethnic minority women are renowned for their remarkable face tattoos. They were tattooed as young girls and forced to wear large earrings to make them so ugly they would not be kidnapped. With younger people reluctant to be inked , Myanmar's tattooing tradition will disappear within a generation. The tattoos, which are created using thorn needles and an ink made from a mixture of cow bile, soot, plants and pig fat, are also a sign of bravery - particularly those etched on the neck, which are the most painful of all.
