When I look at this photo, it makes me think of... struggle, passion, and being on a mission towards something. In a way, I wish this image didn't have a title - or perhaps a less obvious title - because the photo speaks so strongly for itself

I think this photo is about... freedom, and the battle to get there.

Technically, this is a good outcome of what is no doubt a very difficult scene - you have multiple types of light sources, with several different colours, all in different brightnesses. Given all those restraints, I think you've pulled off this photo very well indeed.

What I like about this photo is how symmetrical it is - normally, I abhor centred compositions, but it really works in this case. The fact that there are different colours really adds to the image, although I feel it's too cold and weak (more about that in a bit). I really enjoy the simplicity of this composition, and the powerful imagery, too.

If I were to improve or change anything, I would have a closer look at the colours - Cyan / Teal isn't really a colour I connect with an epic race struggle, and the lack of colour depth in the image makes it weaker.

If you have a chance to return to this scene, bring some coloured gels with you, and a couple of flash guns, lighting the sculpture with a different set of colours - or cheat and use Photoshop, that's also entirely possible... I did a quick mock-up here:

... which also includes a quick re-crop, mostly to reduce the amount of ground (and that 40/50 kph sign in the background between the trees which annoys me more than it really should) in the photo. It ain't perfect, but it does illustrate how using more powerful and more symbolic colours might add impact to this particular photograph

Overall, I think you've got a strong photo here. Colourful, contrasty, and symbolic - 3 things I love in photography.

Finally, if you fancy it, why not add this photo to the Flickr pool?

This is a Photocritic photo critique. If you want one, too, check out my photo critiques page. Also, why not make Flickr a better place for photographers by doing photo critiques yourself, too? Go on, you know you want to...
