I had been observing this young male Red-tailed hawk perched in a Torrey Pine tree for about an hour when he suddenly decided to launch and attack a squirrel in the undergrowth below the tree.

I noticed the hawk had blood on his talons and later found out from another photographer (who had been in the area earlier) that the hawk had captured a squirrel that morning, but it had gotten away from him. When I took this shot, it was obvious the hawk was intent on re-capturing his lost meal.
